ICELAND If you like adventure and are a fan of nature, Iceland is definitely the place to go! As a Junior in college I had the opportunity to study abroad in Iceland for a week. it was an absolute blast getting to explore the city of Reykjavik and learning more about Icelandic culture. There's a lot to see and do in the country, so I thought I'd share some of my favorite excursions and places! Places to visit and things to do: 1. GULLFOSS WATERFALL Check out Gullfoss waterfall located in the canyon of the Hvítá river in southwest Iceland. Take in absolutely stunning views and enjoy lunch in the cafe located at the top of the mountain. Make sure to bring a raincoat and good walking shoes! The mist from the waterfall is very cold since it comes from melting icebergs! The rocks surrounding the waterfall are slippery and a little difficult to climb. Bring a GoPro or waterproof camera and capture the beauty of the falls. If you're lucky you may even catch a rainbow while you're there! The views are absolutely stunning. It's a must see while visiting Iceland. Find out more using the link below! 2. BLUE LAGOON The blue lagoon is one of Iceland's most well known landmarks. If you're wondering whether or not it's worth it- I'm here to tell you it is! The blue lagoon is naturally that blue due to minerals tapped from the ground. It is absolutely stunning! On top of the gorgeous views, it is one of the most relaxing places to be. With spa like bathrooms, products made from natural ingredients found at the lagoon, free face masks, free alcoholic beverages, a water massage wall, and the warm water, the whole experience is magical. You leave the property feeling so relaxed! I recommend going upon arrival to Iceland or before traveling back home to relax those muscles before or after your flight! Upon arrival you'll receive a wristband that is waterproof and is used to open your provided locker. The lagoon offers individual showers stocked with towels, shampoo, conditioner, and body wash, all you need is a bathing suit and a change of clothes! View their website using the link below. 3. STROKKUR GEYSER The Great Geyser is a must see if you're traveling in Southwestern Iceland. Erupting about every 15 minutes, it's easy to experience the natural wonder. Make sure to bring a camera or phone to capture the beauty of the geyser. A raincoat is also nice to have if you're not in the mood to get wet. Surrounding the Geyser is an easy hike that leads to an incredible view of the countryside. The countries Lupin flowers cover the hill all the to the top. This is a fun stop if you've got other things planned around the area. No more than 30 minutes is needed to take in all the scenery here! Find out more using the link below. 4. THE GEOTHERMAL PARK Hveragerði geothermal park is a nice excursion to learn about the natural geysers that inhabit Iceland. The park has an artificial geyser on the property and several natural hot springs. It's a nice place to stop on the way to other attractions! Find out more using the link below. 5. WHALE & PUFFIN WATCHING Whale watching was one of my favorite experiences in Iceland! While no whales breeched on our trip, it was an amazing way to see some of Icelands beautiful scenery. We chose to do a whale watching tour which also allowed us to see some cute puffins as well. The water is stunning and it was nice to see the country from a different view. The tour was very reasonable per person and I would highly recommend if you have the time! It can get chilly, so I would recommend bringing a hat and a thick coat. The tour we chose had blankets for each of the guests and snacks were available for purchase. Your hotel will be able to help you choose and book the best tour! The trip I chose is linked below. 6. SANDHOLT BAKERY Sandholt Bakery is located in the center of Reykjavik and offers some of the most delicious pastries. The atmosphere is beautiful and offers a nice aesthetic for a cute Instagram pic. I would highly recommend the cinnamon buns and a warm cup of coffee! Be sure to check it out on your walk through downtown. If you're in the shopping mood, there's a boutique across the street called 'farmers and friends'. They sell the cutest clothes that make the perfect practical souvenir to help remember your trip! 7. ICELANDIC SAGAS I know, this is a weird suggestion! When I first learned we would be attending a play about Vikings, I wasn't very excited. How fun could it be for a young adult? Well, I am here to tell you it was a blast! While some parts were definitely quirky, the overall show was so entertaining and funny. It was filled with history and fun facts about Iceland. The actors and actresses made the show fun while also being informative. Audience participation is a big part of the show and there's a meet and greet with the cast members afterwards. Get your picture taken with the props and enjoy the show! The show lasts about 75 minutes and is full of rich history and comedy. I would highly recommend attending a show while visiting! You can buy tickets below. 8. SUNRUN 5K, 10K, HALF MARATHON I don't run. I really just don't. When I first saw on our itinerary that we were participating in a 10k I almost dropped the trip, seriously. I am so glad I didn't! While a 10k sounds intimidating, the scenery along the way was so worth it. The Sun Run takes place in June in celebration of the midnight sun. If a 10k isn't your thing, they offer a 5k and half marathon option as well! It is a fun event to experience with locals, as well as runners from all over the world. The race is a unique opportunity and I would highly recommend it if you're traveling in June. Even if running isn't your thing, make sure to stay awake for the Midnight Sun! The Secret Lagoon is beautiful and I would highly recommend booking a trip to soak in the warm water. It was definitely an experience. Before entering any lagoon in the country, you are required to shower naked. At this particular lagoon, you are required to shower naked in gang-style showers. This means you are showering with people you know and people you don't. It was definitely a unique experience, but it's just part of the culture there! Make sure to bring your own towel for this one. They also have pool noodles that you can float around on in the lagoon. Bring your phone and snap some pictures as you experience the warm water of the Secret Lagoon! Hot springs are a large part of Iceland's terrain and are a must when visiting! Check out more about the lagoon by clicking the button below. Iceland is such an amazing place and quickly became one of my favorite travel destinations. I hope these tips help you plan the best trip and allow you to take in everything Iceland has to offer.
